The fish
11 species, each with its own size, temper and favourite lure. Here’s how to find them and how they fight in Big Fish, Blue Sea™.
Billfish are the headline: the blue marlin can top 700 lb and jumps like it pays rent up there, the black marlin pulls like a truck, and white marlin and sailfish turn up in crowds on the right reef. Swordfish hunt deep at the shelf edge. In the tuna rounds the giant bluefin is the one that wins, and it can go well past a thousand pounds. Makos, barracuda and dorado aren’t trophies, but they’ll test your tackle — and a mako has the teeth to cut light line. Each fish below has its own page with its weight range, how it fights, every lure ranked from “loves it” to “ignores it”, and the spots where it bites most.

Blue Marlin
250–700 lbThe big blue. Jumps like it pays rent up there.

Black Marlin

Sailfish
60–180 lbAn acrobat with a sail. Spends half the fight in the air.

White Marlin
40–180 lbSmall, quick and allergic to staying underwater. Shows up in packs, leaves in a hurry.

Swordfish
80–300 lbLives deep, dives deeper. Almost never jumps.

Yellowfin Tuna
50–180 lbBlistering runs, never jumps. Counts only where tuna count. Great sashimi either way.

Mako Shark
250–900 lbAll teeth, no points. Chews through light line.

Barracuda
20–60 lbA torpedo with an underbite. Sometimes steals the lure.

Dorado
15–60 lbGreen-gold and goofy. Jumps a lot, weighs a little.

Giant Bluefin Tuna
250–1100 lbHalf a ton of cold-water muscle. Never jumps, never tires, never heard of your lunch break.
